How Summer Fashion Feels
Summer fashion is one of the MOST intimidating seasons of the fashion year. There’s a lot of right ways to do it and a lot of ways that feel wrong. The key to summer fashion is finding the fun, in the closet.
This is the time of year to wear the prints, and the neons and the fun accessories. b u t everything in balance!
Which is why in this newsletter we’re stripping away the frill and getting to the core. So we could build out from there. Because this summer our fashion will be fun. And, it’ll be approachable and comfortable and make us feel super confident!
Finding the Right Fabric
The right fabric will change everything. I say this because the right fabric will give you the breathability, comfort. And, most importantly — let you know how long it’ll last wash after wash.
Another thing to consider when picking out a fabric is opacity. More sheer fabrics are lightweight and feel heavenly during a sticky summer. More thick fabrics provide more structure and coverage with a little cost in how heavy it might feel.
My favorite summer fabrics have to be linen and cotton. Both are so breathable and flowy. Cotton will give you that soft, supple feel without drowning you in sweat.
Linen gives beautiful structure to a piece without losing its breathability. I love that it doesn’t tend to be sheer! Specifically pants, omg yes!
Both of these fabrics are absolutely worth investing in this summer! The cheaper versions of these fabrics will give you a lack luster result. These are the types of pieces that are worth splurging on, even if it’s because of a sale.
To Sheer or not to Sheer
I’ll start by emphasizing that there is no right or wrong answer here. You’ll understand the personal answer with experience! Let’s not be afraid to mix and match to create visual interest and texture.
Sheer in the summer is god sent for layering! They are super breathable and great for pops of color or texture. Especially in the summer where you want to add a little something to an outfit. Without feeling its weight.
Thing is layering means more items— which means more spending. Sheer pieces are also more likely to show sweat and get a bit more beat up in the wash. Sheer pieces also tend to stretch out in some places more than others leaving a wonky fit.
Colors tend to be more muted or diffused the more sheer the material is. And pieces that are bold color and sheer will become muddy and muted as you wash. Bright colors on sheer pieces also make it harder to layer! For the less fashion experienced like myself.
Non sheer pieces will also fade in the wash and with use. The difference being how even the fade of color is and how the piece will represent that color over time. These items also feel more modern in style!
Statement Color or Statement Print
There’s a place for statement colors and statement prints. Only one will work at a time so here’s the little pep talk! Statement colors and statement prints both draw the eyes. Statement colors and prints can also be dressed down as opposed to always being for an occasion.
Statement colors lend well to matching sets and being an accent piece. If you’re going for a statement color look for something that’s rich with hue!
Don’t be afraid to go pigmented because it actually looks a lot better on you than in the hanger. Even ordinary cuts and designs really come to life when adding color. It’s meant to be seen and appreciated.
Statement prints really need to stand as one piece. Literally as a dress or jumpsuit. Otherwise they live in the place of being the accent. A statement print can be animal prints or geometric shapes! There is no specific rule that says one is better than another. Even plaid can be a statement in the right garment!
