Video games have taught me a lot of metaphors. "Do you know the definition of insanity?" being my personal favorite for years now. IYKYK.

Killing Games Biggest Misconception:

Even with video games widespread and finally (almost) acknowledged popularity the glaring elephant in the room always lands back on women. Women don't play video games. Women are bad at video games. Women think video games are their competition (phew. should we unpack this?).

This level of disregard that borders on nastiness. From the beginning is why we play quietly. But, I'm tired of whispering. There's plenty of women who play video games. We can have duality! There is so much fun to be had and it's a huge pet peeve of mines when we put ourselves in these boxes.

Game Glossary:

What is a First Person Shooter Game (FPS)?

These are games like Call of Duty. You cannot see your character. The game mechanics heavily revolve around shooting and usually have an online multiplayer.

What is a Role Playing Game (RPG)?

These games are mainly story focused. They vary between being able to make your own character, choosing between set characters, or having one main established character. They have more bang for the buck for variety and time.

What is a Metroidvania Game?

The name comes from games that are like Metroid or Castlevania. These type of games depend on building muscle memory and skill. The world usually takes center stage more than the individual characters unlike a Role Playing Game (RPG). These games will take trial and error. I find the games are usually beautiful to look at.

What is a Sports Game?

These games are arcade leaning games in the setting of popular sports. Games like NBA 2K, MLB The Show, and Madden. These games are great for learning about sports. They come out yearly and the most recent game would have an updated roster of players that are from real teams. The most up to date games are labeled with a year ahead. So, NBA 2K 2022 would be the 2021 release.

What is a Strategy Game?

These games are heavily dependent on strategy as the name says. There is more than one variable you need to keep in mind. These games are a time sink and require your complete attention.

What is a Racing Game?

These games are about racing. They can be arcade or simulation leaning. My personal favorite being Mario Kart. These games are good for zoning out. They have a collection element in terms of cars depending on the game.

What is an Action/Adventure Game?

These games are story based like an RPG. Exception being that Action games vary in gameplay styles. Some movie based games fall into this category. Action and Adventure games equally value story and gameplay.

What is a Fighting Game?

These games are heavily skill based and usually are one on one. They have set moves for a roster of characters that are easy to pick up but hard to master. They usually put emphasis on being fast when you click the buttons and visually pleasing character models.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps -

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a Metroidvania game that has stolen my heart since it's first game! It's such a beautiful game to look at and I love the main character you get to play as. It helps me wind down and even when I'm losing repeatedly. I love the fluidity and grace the game seems to have in all its respects.

Got me thinking:

Video games are still in their adolescence. I want to be a part of the movement of making games more welcoming to people. You're not gonna like every game. You're gonna hate some games. You might go back and end up loving it. You might try something you love and binge it like Netflix. This medium of entertainment is so unique and it deserves to continue to flourish.
