Personalizing Aesthetics

There is no such thing as just one aesthetic

Personalizing Aesthetics

I love that the word aesthetics has become popular for defining different styles. Not only does it sound super romantic to me. But, it reminds me that it doesn’t just have to be one singular aesthetic. It makes the different moods of outfits have more personality.

Aesthetics make it easy to channel our fashion expression. Even not knowing where to start, there’s a guide. Different versions of us inspired by different emphasis and silhouettes. Also, my different aesthetics showcase different emotions I’m wanting to embody at the time I wear them too.

The Importance of a Quality Fashion Mood Board

A good fashion mood board is my preferred home for all my potential and current aesthetics. Hello Pinterest, what can’t you bring to life? Mood boards for fashion help me visualize the different colors, and general structures a certain aesthetic has which makes it easy to figure out what works for me.

Dismiss the Fashion Police

Also! The aesthetic you pick has no business being judged by others! Who cares if your aesthetic is considered boring? Or overplayed? The whole point is to be able to express being multifaceted. Express that in the way that makes you feel best.

Multiple Fashion Aesthetics

The aesthetics that most flatter your body type are the perfect place to start exploring. Aesthetics usually embody a set of colors, so it’s actually really fun to see which colors make you feel the best. Pulling from your experience in your own closet.

Aesthetics are a guide to train the brain to find complimentary pieces. Different aesthetics bring the eye to different parts of an outfit. Things like accessories are heaven sent for crossing from one aesthetic to another!

Body Types

I’ve talked about body types, especially Gibbs body types(!!!). It really has such an impact on how I feel about the clothes I put on my body. Because, the way an outfit lays on you is going to lay different than you see it on a display. Or worse, a photo.

I champion how important it is to search out people who look similar to you. Someone with a similar bust size. Someone close to your height. These don’t have to be the same person either. Finding multiple people that have similar shapes to you makes it easier to see what flatters the body. Because, I know when I look at my reflection. Sometimes the effect doesn’t feel like it transfers the way I expected.

Color in Fashion

Find your happy colors! Sometimes they’re actually not your favorite colors overall. In fact, explore new colors! Add colors to your closet gradually, with second tier closet staples. Always try new colors with items that you like, but aren’t the first things you reach for. It’ll throw off your eyes adjusting to how the color works in your closet.

Integration of Closet and Aesthetic

The clothes you currently wear most are your aesthetic. Maybe you’re not where you want to be with it yet. Or you want to course correct. But, you have a start. Work with the outfits that make you most confident. This is the base of your aesthetic.

Your closet is a physical manifestation of what you’ve liked. Even if that’s changed, knowing what you don’t like is important. Arguably, more important than knowing what you do like. The point of studying your closet is to make a general aesthetic. It tells you what you’re comfortable wearing day to day.

A Base for Your Fashion Aesthetic

My aesthetic is a far cry from my pinterest board. For now! But, I have this base for myself. I know the colors I’m drawn to and the pieces that get the most wear. So far, I’ve established that I’m very firmly a graphic tee and neutral colors type girl. Reply to this email and let me know what you wear the most of 🤭.

If you don’t like what you wear the most. Do you wear it only because it’s the only thing that looks okay? Amp up with different accessories. They’re a small, but impactful, way to walk yourself in the right direction. Hunt in your closet for the clothes saved for special occasions. Congrats! The special occasion is today 😁!

Recreating Pinterest Outfits

Go out of your way whenever possible to recreate Pinterest outfits! Even if you don’t have all the pieces, you’ll end up with a new outfit. Doing this always pushing me to look at my closet through a different lens. And bonus if you can recreate it! Now you know you’re on the right track!

Lifestyle Considerations for Fashion

It’s worth the time to figure out which aesthetics or mix of aesthetics getting you excited about your closet and your body. A huge consideration to moving forward is whether it fits your lifestyle. What’s the intent for how frequently you want to emphasize one over the other?

How much I would be such a high heel girly if it worked for my lifestyle. I love a good heel! I love a strappy, moody heel moment. I could count the times on one hand that I’ve had the occasion to wear them. Can’t even walk too long in them either, but I love to look. And how I look in them, suddenly, I’m all legs 🥰.

I have an at home clothes aesthetic and an outside clothes aesthetic as the very base of my closet. It has been a decision maker upon many potential additions. Because, as much as I love the look and feel of something. If I don’t see myself using it often it gets bumped down.

Lifestyle considerations help you make the most out of every shopping spree. Avoiding the dreaded buyer’s remorse. It’s easier to shop for clothes that contribute to your current lifestyle than for a future one. Plus, every shopping trip could be a tribute and celebration of transitions through circumstance which is a beautiful thing.
