repeat after me: if you can make it in new york city, you could make it anywhere.
When in New York City:
Living here in NYC, especially as a writer, I do find myself feeling very Carrie Bradshaw. Despite never seeing an episode, there's a certain charm that comes with living in this city that has a way of electrifying what you give it. The vibe is intense, vibrant and completely whole on its own. It's more than Times Square and Central Park. It's risking the hole in the wall restaurant and getting the most amazing food and welcoming experience. It's about standing on the viewing deck of the Empire State Building and still looking up beyond it.
NYC Myths:
People in New York City are mean
People in NYC move with a purpose, there is somewhere to be. While the city is a popular tourist destination. We are trying to get to work, we are trying to meet up with our friends. This is every day. Sometimes, there's this perspective. That because you stop someone you are entitled to their help. While, we're happy to help for the most part. It isn't fair to ask for a favor and frame it as a demand.
Side note: please mind foot traffic. Look up from the inner sidewalk, not the middle of it.
Everything is so expensive
While most things are expensive, like rent and groceries. Not everything is expensive. When you know where to look. When you know what area you're in. Living here, it becomes easier to experience more of the city on a budget. Even for free, given the right circumstances. NYC rewards you when you go a bit off the beaten path with a healthy dose of common sense.
NYC is dangerous
New York City is dangerous. Any city can be dangerous if you don't know your way around. Of course, there's what you visit for. The sites to see aren't inherently dangerous. Midtown is home to most tourist sights. It gives to reason that once you step away from what NYC sells you, you're getting into people's real lives. Everywhere you go there are good people and bad people. Everywhere you go there are good areas and bad ones. There will always be a bad side of town, and the same applies to the city.
NYC Culture Defined:
If it's a different borough , it's a different vibe. Manhattan gives differently than Queens. The Bronx gives different than Brooklyn. Don't underestimate how big of a city we are. We are a mixing pot of different cultures but in that still develop a deep sense of community with our neighbors. As a non- native, you learn to not go where you don't know. If you don't know the area or anyone there, you'll lose the charm. Potentially even adding danger of getting lost.
Not all doom and gloom, I assure you. Plan it just right and you'll get the warmth of our people and experience foods, events and festivals in a way that won't feel the same anywhere else.
Every part of this city has a beauty to admire and gifts to give. It's okay that some gifts are worth keeping local. There's a cautionary tale in supporting local businesses. Mind your dollar if you want to maintain the lifestyle of the borough you're experiencing. It's a great feeling to be in on a little local secret.
This Week's Favs:

there is something absolutely mouthwatering about a generously made sandwich with a soda included in the price. the rows of hot and cold options all packed up in a hero or a roll. fresh bread from a local bakery that really doesn't miss.
